The Importance of Having Effective First Aid Supplies

Posted by admin on February 23, 2012 at 12:30 pm. Filed under: Medical Supplies

Most of us do not think about the importance of having effective first aid supplies until some medical emergency happens. Indeed, it is not usually until after an unpleasant medical incident or ‘near miss’ has occurred that we realise just how vital a well-stocked first aid kit can be.

Obviously, accidents can occur anywhere and everywhere. Regardless of whether they are minor scrapes, serious bone breaks or medical emergencies; the need for first aid provision is significant and vital. Therefore, it is essential that people keep first aid kits in areas where they are likely to spend significant amounts of time.

Naturally, if you have a first aid kit in your home, in your car or at your place of work, it is very important that you keep it stocked with items that are relevant to your environment. Everyday essentials like bandages and antiseptic wipes are integral features of any first aid box as they enable wounds to be quickly cleaned and dressed. Similarly, cold and hot compressor packs are also a valuable addition as they can provide casualties with immediate pain relief. However, even though associated items like high-visibility vests may well come in handy in a car or workplace first aid kit; they are not so necessary in a home kit so there is little point in having them take up valuable space.

Making the Most of your First Aid Kit

Whether it’s a small graze, large injury or medical emergency, a well-stocked first aid kit can help you to provide effective treatment for a wide range of health problems. Here are some tips on how to make the most of your first aid kit.

Use an information guide
It can sometimes be difficult to know exactly what to include in a first aid kit, therefore it can often be beneficial to get hold of a first aid guide from one of the main first aid governing bodies (Red Cross, St John’s Ambulance, etc). These guides are a great addition to any first aid box as not only do they provide you with a comprehensive list of all the items you will need, many of them also have basic care instructions included so you can refresh your knowledge every time you replenish your first aid supplies.

Keep it well-stocked
You never know when an accident or injury is going to happen so it is vital that you ensure your first aid box is adequately stocked with the proper supplies at all times. Trying to deal with a medical emergency without the right equipment will at best provide further discomfort to the casualty and at worst stop you from providing what might well be essential treatment. Always, replenish your first aid kit after you have used it and check it periodically to see whether any of the products inside are nearing their expiry dates.
