Saving Lives with High Quality First Aid Equipment

The variety and quality of medical products has increased dramatically over the years. These days, it’s possible to source an array of sophisticated and effective items that serve a wide range of purposes.

For example, there are many different pieces of first aid equipment for you to peruse when you’re on the lookout for items like this.

Medical products prove vital

One incident that highlighted the importance of effective emergency equipment involved a boy from York. According to a report on ITV News, toddler Zach Hilary recently suffered a heart attack, but he was saved thanks to the quick actions of his mother and the medical treatment provided by paramedics and subsequently by hospital doctors.

The youngster’s heart stopped beating for a total of 39 minutes and was eventually re-started with the help of defibrillators.

A cool head

When Zach’s mother Trudy found her son collapsed, she rang 999. Over the phone, an emergency operator gave her instructions and she was able to provide vital resuscitation. After a short time, an ambulance crew took over and the child was eventually resuscitated at York Hospital.

Commenting on the incident, Ms Hilary said: “I can just remember screaming because he had stopped breathing while I was looking at him… I had to get his chin back and clear the airway… I had done a first aid course, but it was ten years ago.”

In the headlines

Defibrillators have been in the headlines a lot over recent months. An incident involving footballer Fabrice Muamba highlighted the crucial role these devices can play. Shocked fans looked on as the 24-year-old suffered a heart attack on the pitch during an FA cup tie in March. However, despite the fact that his heart stopped for 78 minutes, he survived the incident unscathed.

The fast actions of pitch-side medics and the presence of crucial medical products, as well as the skill of hospital doctors, were credited with his impressive recovery.

Since the medical emergency, there have been calls by many individuals and organisations for more defibrillators to be made available in public areas such as football grounds.

Sourcing Great Value Medical Equipment

Getting the right medical equipment is vital. If your organisation doesn’t have access to the appropriate products, you might struggle to do your job properly. However, at present you might be feeling the financial pinch and so sourcing the items could prove tricky.

The good news is, as long as you know where to look, you can access supplies that represent superb value for money.

Times are tough

If your budget’s under pressure, you’re by no means alone. Economic conditions remain strained and cutbacks are being made. For example, NHS trusts are having to rein in their spending around the UK.

One of the organisations that’s feeling the strain is the Oxford University Hospitals Trust (OUH). According to a report in the Oxford Times, it faces £160 million of spending reductions over the next four years. This is around five per cent of its total budget and it is part of a government austerity drive to reduce the cost of the NHS by around £20 billion.

Speedy action

Meanwhile, there’s no time for the OUH to rest on its laurels. Around £49 million of savings have to be made over the course of the next year alone and it is thought that a number of jobs will be lost as part of this process.

The organisation’s chief executive Sir Jonathan Michael said: “I think we will see further reductions in staff numbers. But I think it will be gradual and we will also see gradual reduction in the overall cost of the workforce. The process is we agree budgets with the departments within the organisation. When budgets are agreed they come forward with workforce plans.”

An ongoing process

The trust’s budget has already been squeezed. Last year, it made savings of £52 million and a number of roles were axed.  Meanwhile, year-on-year savings will have to be made until 2015.

This means that like many other organisations around the country, the OUH will have to be savvy when it is stocking up on medical products.
