Sourcing Medical Supplies on a Budget

It’s no secret that the UK economy is flagging and like many organisations, yours might be struggling to balance the books. The public sector has been hit especially hard. As part of its bid to reduce the country’s structural deficit, the government has implemented a series of funding cuts and health organisations are having to rein in their spending.

Of course, although you may be operating with limited resources, your organisation cannot compromise in terms of the quality of services you provide. This means that when you’re on the lookout for medical equipment, you’ll have to be savvy. Unless you get superb value products, you might struggle to purchase everything you need.

Under pressure

Recently, GP magazine released figures it got as a result of a freedom of information request concerning spending on clinical procedures. It found that 90 per cent of primary care trusts were restricting procedures such as hip, knee and cataract operations, weight loss surgery and tonsillectomies because they are under pressure to save cash.

Of the 101 trusts that provided figures, nine in ten had systems in place to restrict GP referrals for procedures thought to be non-urgent or of low clinical value.

Response

However, commenting on the issue, health minister Simon Burns said: “Decisions on treatments, including suitability for surgery, should be made by clinicians based on what is most clinically appropriate for the patient and take the individual patient’s needs into account.

“No right-thinking person could possibly understand how anyone could delay a patient’s treatment unnecessarily. If patients need treatment, they should get it when they want it and where they want it. If local health bodies stop patients from having treatments on the basis of cost alone we will take action against them.”

Making your money stretch further

During times like this, it’s particularly important to ensure that your organisation’s budget stretches as far as possible. So, when you’re on the lookout for new medical instruments, stethoscopes and so on, it’s a good idea to find a supplier that offers you great value for money.

Boosting Hygiene with the Best Medical Supplies

Cleanliness is important in many working spaces, but in medical buildings, it’s a particularly major concern. We’ve all heard of the tragic consequences that can unfold when hygiene lapses occur in hospitals and other clinical environments.

So, it’s vital that your organisation has access to superb quality medical supplies and cleaning items. Without the right gloves, cleansing products, waste disposal provisions and so on, you might struggle to avoid infection issues.

Hospital praised for its efforts

One organisation that seems to have got this pegged is South Tyneside District Hospital. Recently it was identified as being one of the best-performing units in England and Wales in terms of keeping infection rates low, the Shields Gazette reports.

There were no cases of MRSA bacteraemia at the centre between April last year and the same month this year. Meanwhile, bosses still place great emphasis on keeping control of cleanliness. Carole Clark, one of South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust’s infection prevention matrons, remarked: “We are committed to the prevention of infections, or their spread when they occur. It is everyone’s responsibility and we place huge importance on making sure everyone knows what they can do to help reduce infection, and that they have the tools to do so.”

Rigorous approach

Meanwhile, talking about the tactics employed by the organisation, she added: “We hold meetings to look at the latest information on prevention of infection, which can be used by our infection control leaders in their wards and departments. We also look at working practices, so we can decide if there are things we could do better.

“Ensuring we know what to do to avoid infection and actually doing this every time are crucial to delivering clean, safe care.”

Idea of the Year

To incentivise improvements, managers identify the wards that innovate in terms of cleanliness. The Idea of the Year Award for the best infection prevention and control initiative was handed to Ward 19 for the removal of commodes from routine use.

Instead, elderly patients are taken to the toilet wherever possible. As well as reducing the risk of micro-organism transmission, this also improves patient privacy and dignity.
