Most technicians will agree that shears are slow and sometimes fail.  The initial cut can be difficult with many materials - more so if the patient is moving or convulsing.  The repetitive motions of squeezing the shears can be both tiring and time consuming.  Each time the shears are opened, and pushed towards the article of clothing, the lower arm comes in closer contact with the patient.
